The VTCT Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training qualification will provide you with the knowledge, understanding and skills to teach, and develop a range of personal qualities and attributes required for teaching, assessing and supporting learners.

You will learn about wider professional practice, theories, principles and models in education as well as teaching, learning and assessment in education. During your course you will also have the opportunity to choose from a range of optional units including action research, inclusive practice, teaching in a specialist area and preparing for the personal tutoring role.

This qualification is a nationally recognised qualification for those individuals who aspire to, or hold a teaching role with an extensive range of teaching or training responsibilities.

Course Units

Unit 1: Teaching, learning and assessment in education and training

The aim of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge, understanding and skills relating to teaching, learning and assessment in education and training.

You will understand the role and responsibilities of a teacher in education and training, agree individual learning goals and planning, as well as delivering and assessing inclusive teaching and learning.

You will learn how to create and maintain an inclusive learning environment and evaluate your own practice.

Unit 2 : Developing teaching, learning and assessment in education and training

The aim of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge, understanding and skills relating to developing teaching, learning and assessment in education and training.

It includes investigating practice in own area of specialism, applying theories, principles and models of learning, communication and assessment in relation to planning, delivering and assessing inclusive teaching and learning.

It also involves applying theories of behaviour management in creating and maintaining an inclusive learning environment and applying theories and models of reflection to evaluate own practice.

Unitr 3 : Theories, principles and models in education and training

The aim of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge and understanding of theories, principles and models applied to education and training.

You will learn about the application of theories, principles and models of learning, communication and assessment in education and training.

You will also cover the application of theories and models of curriculum development within your own area of specialism, and the application of theories and models of reflection and evaluation of your own practice.

Unit 4 : Wider professional practice and development in education and training

The aim of this unit is to provide you with the knowledge, understanding and skills relating to wider professional practice in education and training.

You will learn about professionalism and professional values in education and training, the policy context of education and training, the impact of being accountable to stakeholders and external bodies, and the organisational context of education and training.

You will also understand how to contribute to the quality improvement and quality assurance arrangements of an organisation.

Unit 5 : Action research

This unit is about providing Action Research, and  is a method of systematic enquiry that teachers undertake as researchers of their own practice.

The enquiry involved in Action Research is often visualised as a cyclical process.

The start of the process is usually an issue or situation that, as a teacher, you want to change. You will be supported in turning this ‘interesting problem’ into a ‘researchable question’ and then developing actions to try out. You will draw on the findings of other researchers to help develop actions and interpret the consequences.

As an action researcher, or teacher-researcher, you will generate research. Enquiring into your practice will inevitably lead you to question the assumptions and values that are often overlooked during the course of normal school life. Assuming the habit of inquiry can become an ongoing commitment to learning and developing as a practitioner. As a teacher-researcher you assume the responsibility for being the agent and source of change.

Unit 6 : Inclusive practice

This unit is about inclusive practice. It is a teaching approach that recognises the differences between students and uses this to ensure that all students can access educational content and participate fully in their learning.

It understands that no two pupils are the same and ensures that lessons and activities accommodate this.

The approach also recognises the benefits that student diversity can bring to the overall learning experience. In fact, inclusive practice has a whole range of benefits for students as well as their teachers and families.

Some of the benefits of inclusive practice include:

  • Teaching pupils about diversity and equality.
  • Developing student empathy and sensitivity to people who are different from themselves.
  • Improving friendships, confidence, and self-image.
  • Providing teachers with additional ways to incorporate problem-solving, teamwork, and collaboration into their lessons.
  • Promoting parental confidence that their children are being accepted and can be successful in the school setting.
Unit 7: Teaching in a specialist area

Role of specialist teacher is important in the institution. Major aim of education and training in the specialist area is important to provide better facilities to the students in the education system to develop better environment in the organization and develop inclusive learning practices in education system.

If the teachers are provided with education and training as a specialist than it can help the students to get better opportunities in the learning process. Main aim of education and training as specialist is to evaluate the current curriculum in the organization and provide various recommendations to improve the education system in organization 

Training and education in specialist area are used to improve the practices that are used in the educational organization to offer better opportunities to the students in the learning program.

These specialist skills can help person to improve in the planning, of curriculum, individual lesson planning, improve the teaching methods at different grade levels.

This is also aim of education and training in the specialist area is to develop better coordination and communication within the education process among the students.
