The aim of the Diploma in Beauty Specialist Level 2 is to enable learners to gainthe necessary practical and theoretical skills in order to provide Skincare and make Up treatments.

The ITEC Level 2 Diploma in Skincare and Make-up is comprised of 11 mandatory units and a minimum of 2 additional units from the following:

  • origins, principles and Theories of Massage
  • Provide Eyelash and Eyebrow Treatments
  • Apply Make-up
  • Provide Manicure Treatments
  • Remove Hair using Waxing Techniques
  • Follow health and Safety Practice in the Salon
  • Salon reception Duties
  • Client care and Communication in beauty related industries
  • Working in Beauty related Industries

con info Guided learning hours for Mandatory units: 443 hrs

Guided learning hours are ‘a notional measure of the substance of a qualification. They include an estimate of the time that might be allocated to direct teaching or instruction together with other structured learning time such as directed assignments, assessments on the job or supported individual study and practice. They exclude Learner initiated private study. 

con info How will I be assessed and graded in this Qualification

This qualification will be internally and externally assessed using ITEC assessment criteria. Once all of the treatment evidence documentation, assignments and underpinning knowledge have been completed, the Learner will have a final practical assessment carried out by the ITEC External Examiner, who will also verify a minimum of 10% sample of all treatment evidence documentation and assignments. Additionakl optional units will be internally assessed and externally verified.

con info  How will this Qualification be Graded

  • Learners must achieve a pass grade in all technical and underpinning knowledge units to achieve the ITEC Level 2 Diploma for for Beauty Specialists.
  • It is the aggregate mark for the practical examinations and the multiple choice therory question papers that forms the overall grade of the qualification - Pass, Merit or Distinction.
  • Assignments and treatment evidence documentation are graded pass or refer
  • If a Learner is unsuccessful in any area, they will be re-assessed only in the unit(s) where they were referred
  • Referrals must be completed within one year of the original assessment. The remainder of the Candidate’s results will stay in the ITEC system until all aspects of each unit have been allocated a pass grade

con info  What resources will there be from East London Beauty academy

  • East London Beauty Academy will provide works stations and trolleys for each Learner.
  • Learners will be made aware of the amount of consumables/towels they will be required to provide.
  • East London beauty Academy will ensure there is one hot wax unit and one cool wax unit between two students and that the wax is the appropriate temperature for use

con info Practical Examination Sequence

Once all aspects of the mandatory units have been completed, Candidates will be expected to complete a final internal practical assessment with their Lecturer/Internal Assessor. They will also undertake a final practical examination in their college environment in the presence of an ITEC External Examiner. Candidates will be expected to perform the following treatments in sequence:

  • Cleanse, Skin analysis, Tint, Tweeze, Massage, Mask Make-up – day Make-up.
  • Make Up - Day Make Up
  • Manicure - 1 hand treated, but both hands to be enameled.
  • Hot and cool wax must be demonstrated as specified by the ITEC External Examiner, to include half leg (either the front of one leg up to and including the knee or the back ofone leg) with cool wax.  The bikini line or underarm (one side only) with hot wax.

  UNITS 800 – Provide facial Skincare and 802 - provide Eyelash and Eyebrow treatments 

  • Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes
  • Consultation forms may be partially filled out prior to the practical examination
  • Clients must be wearing full day make-up
  • Cleanse (7 minutes)
  • Tone
  • Skin analysis
  • Eyelash and eyebrow tint
  • Eyebrow shape
  • Massage (10 minutes)
  • Mask (Two masks must be applied simultaneously on the appropriate areas of the face and neck,
  • to include one clay and one commercial mask)
  • Moisturise

  • Unit 803 – Apply Make-up, Approximately 20 minutes
  • Light day make-up suitable for the client
  • Remove head band/hair protection prior to Examiner final check 

  • UNIT 804 - Provide Manicure treatments, approximately 20 minutes
  • Clients must be wearing nail enamel prior to treatment
  • Full manicure treatment to one hand only but candidates must apply enamel to both.

  • UNIT 806 - Remove hair using Waxing techniques, Approximately 45 Mins
  • It is the responsibility of the college to ensure that candidates supply sufficient clients with a suitable hair growth in all areas 
  • The ITEC external examiner must be notified prior to the start of the examination in the candidates have clients who do not have sufficient here to wax. Candidates may be withdrawn from this unit where the client has insufficient hair growth to permit for demonstration of the required techniques.
  • Candidates must not share clients, however special consideration will apply in extenuating circumstances.
  • Cool Wax (half Leg) either the front of one leg up to and including the knee or the back of one leg. The back of the leg will be specified in cases where hair growth is lacking on the front.
  • Hot wax - bikini or under arm, one side only, as specified by the ITEC external examiner.  

con info  What can I expect at the Exam

  • Oral questions may be asked at any time during the examination
  • Consultation forms must be filled in by each Candidate for each unit and made available for the ITEC External Examiner to check. These should be reviewed and completed at the end of the Treatment and will be taken away by the Examiner
  • Candidates are expected to demonstrate excellent hygiene and client care throughout as well as competence in their relevant skills
  • The Examiner may reduce the treatment timings, as the examination is a demonstration of the Candidate’s professionalism and their accomplished technique
  • Approximate time allocated for changeover of practical examination groups – 15 minutes Treatment Evidence

  • Treatment evidence documentation must be completed under the supervision of a Lecturer who must monitor the quality of the treatments performed throughout the Candidate’s training to ensure that they meet the ITEC criteria. The criteria are detailed on the Treatment Evidence Guidance Forms
  • The Treatment Evidence Guidance Form for each unit should be completed and placed with the treatment evidence for verification by the ITEC External Examiner Treatment Evidence Referral
  • If the treatment evidence documents do not meet the ITEC criteria, the ITEC External Examiner will complete a Candidate Referral Form to help the Candidate strengthen the documentation to gain a pass grade
  • The treatment evidence must be submitted to the ITEC office with all the recommended changes within 3 months of the practical Examination. Extensions to this time frame must be applied for in writing with the relevant supporting evidence supplied. Please ensure that only photocopies are submitted, as treatment evidence documentation will not be returned

Once Candidates have achieved the ITEC Level 2 Diploma in Skincare and Make-up they may progress on to other ITEC or equivalent qualifications at Level 2 and 3, for example:

  • Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Beauty Therapy
  • Level 3 Certificate in Facial Electrical treatments
  • Level 3 Certificate in Body Electrical treatments 
  • Level 3 Diploma in fashion and specialised Make Up 
  • Level 3 Award in Indian Head Massage

  • Level 3 Diploma in Spa Treatments

con info What can I do with this Diploma after I have qualified

This Diploma qualifies Graduates to operate their own salon or home visiting practice. Graduates can also gain employment in Beauty Salons, Hotels, Health Clubs, Spas and Cruise Liners Relationship to National Occupational Standards (NOS)

ITEC has mapped to National Occupational Standards where they exist. ITEC has ensured that best practice in the workplace has been reflected in the syllabus. ITEC has linked the qualification to the relative job roles as well as ensuring that the syllabus reflects the required level of knowledge and ability for the Skincare and Make-up Therapist at Level 2 Professional Body Membership and Insurance
